A man was on holiday in the depths of Louisiana, where he tried to buy some Alligator shoes. However he was not prepared to pay the high prices, and after failing to haggle the vendor down to a reasonable price, exclaimed, “I don't give two hoots for your shoes man, I'll go and kill my own croc!,” The shopkeeper replied, "by all means, just watch out for those two ‘good ole boys’ who are doing the same!” So the man went out into the Bayou, and after a while saw two men with spears, standing still in the water. 'They must be the the good ole boys, he thought. Just then he noticed an alligator moving in the water towards one of them. The guy stood completely passive, even as the gator came ever closer. Just as the beast was about to swallow him, he struck home with his spear and wrestled the gator up onto the beach, where several ‘gators already lay. Together the two guys threw the gator onto its back, whereupon one exclaimed “Darn! This one doesn't have any shoes either!”

HOO's Talking Pets

Making room for a new puppy? Bringing home a new dog can be exciting. Being prepared is smart. To assure a smooth transition for both puppy and owner HOO has tips on how to make your puppy a happy addition to the family.

  1. Puppy proof your home. Pick up all of the things you don’t want the puppy to get into. It’s your responsibility to keep animals safe and out of trouble. Puppies don’t know any better, so it is up to the pet parent to make sure the puppy is supervised. Be sure toys are durable, safe, fun and readily available to substitute for undesirable chewing choices.
  2. Easing the stress of separation. Bring a towel that can be rubbed on the mother dog. It will help comfort the puppy during the drive home. Owners also can use pheromone products that make dogs feel more secure and reduce the urge to act out destructively by chewing, excessive barking or house soiling. Ask your vet for details.
  3. Crates are an effective training tool. A crate place to call his own for time-outs and sleeping. Crate training can be an efficient and effective way to house-train a dog’s bladder and bowel control. Because puppies don’t like to eliminate where they sleep, they’ll learn to wait for scheduled times.
  4. Make potty training easy. Remember puppies have no more control or understanding than a toddler. At first, housebreaking is hit or miss. Puppies won’t remember 5 minutes after they’ve made a mistake what they’ve done to upset you. Start by taking him out as soon as he wakes up in the morning, right after each feeding and nap, as well as right before bed at night. Consistency and positive praise are key.
  5. Choose a peaceful place to sleep. It’s common for puppies to cry in a strange place. An old fashioned ticking clock, a stuffed toy, baby blanket or hot water bottle may settle the pup down. There’s even a spray you can apply to the puppy’s bedding to help him settle in. Above all give your puppy lots of love, attention and positive reinforcement. Consult with your veterinarian early.
